Unlike other body conditioning programs, the focus of the Pilates Method is based on the six Pilates principles; Centering, Concentration, Control, Precision, Breath and Flow. This makes Pilates truly a workout for both the mind and the body. Quality is emphasised over quantity. Fewer repetitions are demanded and true concentration is required. Symmetry, control, and flexibility are stressed. The mind is fully engaged whilst performing each movement, allowing clients to have greater muscle control and coordination.
Poor posture indicates muscle imbalances, often a result of lifestyle or old injuries. Pilates looks at the body as a whole and uses corrective exercises to target these imbalances.
Pilates changes the body by not only increasing its overall strength, but by toning without creating bulk. It is not a weight loss program; clients do however alter the shape of their bodies by lengthening and firming muscles. Pilates can benefit weight loss when included in an aerobic exercise and weight loss programme.
